Dr. Zuming Feng, former International Math Olympiad coach, shares his thoughts on parenting math kids
Dr. Feng, US IMO Team Coach for years (1997- 2013), speaks to parents at the 2015 Math Prize for Girls high-school-level math competition.
Hi Friends
I wanted to share a video I've watched several times over the years featuring Dr. Zuming Feng, former International Math Olympiad coach, during a parent/guardian talk at the "Math Prize For Girls" competition.
Dr. Feng was the US IMO Team Coach for years (1997- 2013) and a faculty member at Phillips Exeter Academy (one of the top U.S. High School Boarding schools) for 25 years before recently moving to the St. Mark's School of Texas. He also runs a program called IDEA MATH (5th grade through 12th) and has written several IMO-level math problems and training books (amazon link).
The description of the high-school-level-math competition is "The Advantage Testing Foundation/Jane Street Math Prize for Girls is the largest math prize for girls in the world. Each fall at MIT, about 250 young female mathematicians compete in our challenging test of mathematical creativity and insight. Our goal is to promote gender equity in the STEM professions and to encourage young women with exceptional potential to become mathematical and scientific leaders."
I've watched the video multiple times because it is interesting to hear Dr. Feng's thoughts on math competitions, parenting math kids, coaching them at a high level, and if/when acceleration can make sense.
Given the students he's worked with, his 16 years as the IMO coach, and the length of the video (~35 minutes), you might enjoy it.
I'm embedding it here so you can enjoy it.
Wishing you the happiest of holidays!
Until next time,
Sebastian
